Over the past several decades educational reform in the United States has focused on student outcomes. In general, scholars agree that teacher quality is probably the most important school-based factor affecting student achievement. Studies focusing on the characteristics of highly effective language teachers suggest the importance of teachers’ identity as it relates to the workplace, communicative competence, motivational orientation as well as one’s sense of humor and sense of efficacy have positive effects on students and instructors alike. Grounded theoretically, empirical research on these five teacher characteristics as they are related to student outcomes will be presented. Afterward, the presenter discusses high-leverage teaching practices that have been shown to improve teaching and learning of languages. This research has implications for world language teachers and district administrators.
